The Strategic Plan is designed to ensure all students are proficient in literacy and numeracy by third grade. Decreased class sizes at the elementary and secondary schools improves student outcomes and maximizes District efficiencies.
Each summer, between 250 and 300 new employees are hired into the District due to vacancies that have been created. Because there are staffing needs each year when schools are closed we would be able to adjust staffing levels through attrition – a gradual process made possible as staff retire or leave the District for one reason or another. This process will take five to seven years. No layoffs would occur as the result of building closures.

Aren't the vacancies which have been created due to Teachers NOT having their contracts renewed? So this plan will force people to retire? Of course No layoff will occur, when some will not have their contracts renewed. To me, that is just another word for firing them.
ReplyDeleteI certainly understand the teacher loss and replacement numbers, but there are a number of non-teaching positions that are being eliminated; registrars, bookkeepers, technology personnel that do seem to be losing their jobs. These are big losses to the high schools and hurt the community. These people will not find the same quality of jobs outside the school system. Will there really be a need for all teachers to be full time when the system goes to the portfolio model? If academics are in the morning and the special program courses in the afternoon wouldn't it be wise to utilize part-time teachers who are retired and don't require benefits. A lot of money could be saved using part time retirees in positions where the system pays no TRS, SSI or health benefits.
ReplyDeleteWill layoffs occur because of other reasons?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your question about the proposed Strategic Plan. Layoffs for other reasons are not a part of the proposed Plan.
DeleteIs it possible to close up to twelve schools, while cutting no more than 300 jobs, and then only through attrition?
ReplyDeleteWill we be hiring teachers from China simultaneously?
How many more staff members are slated to be hired for jobs at the new Welcome Center?
How many new jobs will be made at the Board Offices?
Thank you very much for taking the time to voice your concerns regarding the proposed Strategic Plan. Currently, each summer we hire between 250 and 300 new employees. We are also looking at a possibility of hiring 10 teachers from China next year.
DeleteSo you are putting down In Writing that NO Teaching positions, nor support staff, ie. Custodial/lunchroom/ParaPros/Coaches/etc. would be dismissed or "dissolved"? Even though there are 12 schools in the schedule to be closed?
ReplyDeleteCan you identify the make up of the largest segment of the systems "300 new employees" are Hired each year? If so Why such a turn over rate?
You may use my name as I ask all questions without fear of reprisal. As well as seeking to push others to step forth. Brad DeFore
I didn't think you'd answer this question, although I am amazed that it has stayed listed in the posts.
DeleteSo will you commit to writing that no Current Teaching positions and or support Faculty will be dismissed?
As well as can you provide data as to the departments from which these 300+ new employees hired every year resolve from?
Is there a summation as to why the high turn over rate within those areas? I can assure you that in a large corporation (take the MCCG which is the largest employer in Bibb) were there 300 new hires every year they would be assessing the reason. It is quite expensive to process a New employee, much less 300+ EVERY Year...
My plan is for reduction in forces to take place through attrition. Staff members leave this District each year for various reasons. The turnover rate can be attributed to a variety of different things. We will continue to do all that we can to promote and deliver effective instruction.
DeleteCan you further explain how you plan on decreasing the class size while also reducing the number of teachers and schools? You are not answering the question that concerned parents have regarding these areas.
ReplyDeleteHow many of these 250 to 300 new employees on average are staff/admin type positions versus actual classroom teachers.
Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding the proposed Strategic Plan. We currently have schools where some elementary and secondary classes have more than 30 students. What we are proposing is to cap our elementary classes at 25 students and our secondary classes at 30 students.
DeleteDr. Dallemand, while parents appreciate that you are responding, you did not answer the poster's question. The question was "how" do you plan on decreasing class sizes while reducing the number of teachers and schools. We've all heard the caps on students that you propose, but most people cannot fathom how this is possible. We've read and heard all the points in the plan, but parents need the how's and why's of the plan before we can support part or all of it. I, for one, would be most appreciative of hearing those, as well as more honesty and transparency from you and your administration (such as all the things this administration is already implementing and money it is spending in the schools that is part of the yet unapproved plan). We are entrusting our children to our schools, teachers, principals, and ultimately, to you, so please show us the respect we deserve and give us the information we require to make the best decision possible for them.
DeleteClass sizes and possible school closures will be carefully thought out and planned. What at this point may seem impossible can come into fruition with careful research and planning. We are not approaching these issues lightly. All factors will be considered.
